Letter from the President and CEO
During my first several months as President and CEO of The Hunger Project (THP), I have learned a great deal, especially about the incredible impact our programs have on women, men and children in the developing world.
Though THP was still experiencing the effects of the global financial downturn in 2010, much progress was made in our programs throughout Africa, South Asia and Latin America, as you will see throughout this report. New partnerships were formed to leverage our resources in the most effective manner, we were in the spotlight in the media — thanks to a wonderful book by THP investors Kevin and Hannah Salwen, as well as the World Hunger Day gala concert with Dionne Warwick in London — and we are playing an increasingly active role in global initiatives as the world strives to accelerate progress toward the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
This upward momentum was aptly captured in the theme of our October Fall Event in New York City, “Breaking New Ground.” At that event, I was deeply impressed by our global investor family. I learned that being part of THP’s family is one of the most important things in our investors’ lives. No matter where they are in the world, no matter how much they have chosen to invest, people feel deeply about their connection with our village partners across the globe, and they experience being part of something that is bigger than themselves. And, our village partners feel the same way about our investors.
It is an honor and a privilege for me to be part of this family and to be able to call THP “home.” As I said at the Fall Event, everything I have ever done in my life –– from non-profit leadership, to my faith community, to my volunteer experience, to my personal political activism –– has led me to THP. This is not a stepping stone in my life’s work; it is the capstone.
I truly believe that THP has found the answer. It is not about helping or saving people. It’s about unleashing the power of people to take charge of their own future — and walking in partnership with them as they undertake this journey for themselves.
I thank you for joining us along the way.
